"Only the blink of an eye ago, everything was fine, everything was in order and everything looked promising. Now chaos and disorder threatened to ruin it all."
Mathematician Henri has learned recently that you can't predict anything, no matter how good your calculations. The fun park he inherited from his late brother seems to finally be getting under control, the dangerous debts he inherited with it clearing, and his growing relationship with artist Laura is starting to take shape. It feels like everything is finally getting under control.
But he doesn't have the time to get settled into his new life before it all starts to go wrong - again. The park is at risk when their suppliers won't sell them the Moose Chute - the must have attraction for success, and they seem to have been taken over by some shady characters who want to make trouble for Henri. And as he tries to untie that Gordion Knot, ghosts from the past return to the park to haunt his life in ways he never would have imagined.
Henri needs to get the bottom of the mysterious menaces plaguing the adventure park if it, and he, is going to survive.
"Mathematics has saved my life, both figuratively and literally. This is what Mathematics does; it saves us. It brings balance, clarity, and peace of mind."
Henri is back in the second instalment of the Rabbit Factor trilogy and better than ever. Bringing back this genre-blending and mind-bending style that makes Tuomainen undeniably iconic, The Moose Paradox is a glorious mess of chaos and confusion in the best way.
Tuomainen doesn't hold back - dropping bombs on us just a few pages into the story, starting with absolutely diabolical twists that keep your head spinning until the very end. The pacing was perfect, moving quickly and jumping erratically from moment to moment, the crazy antics and curious incidents building with every page until the tension builds to a monumental level.
It was an absolute joy to see Henri again, and to see that even with everything he has been through he hasn't lost his dry wit and almost painfully logical demeanour. We get to see even more depth to a character that on the surface seems distant and one-dimensional but underneath is a fully developed person full of uniqueness and emotion. And of course, we are reintroduced to the eccentric and eclectic cast of the YouMeFun park - enjoying the stunning yet jarring juxtaposition of the colours and lights of the park with the shadowy underbelly lurking below.
A masterful blend of gritty crime, thrilling drama and complete chaos that is a testament to why Tuomainen is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated authors in Europe.
