Alexander Blix is a broken man. Convicted for avenging his daughter's death, he is now being held in one of Norway's high-security prisons.
Inside, the other prisoners take every opportunity to challenge and humiliate the former police investigator. On the outside, Blix's former colleagues have begun the hunt for a terrifying killer. Walter Kroos has escaped from prison in Germany and is making his way north. The only lead established by the police is that Kroos has a friend in Blix's prison ward. And now they need Blix's help.
Journalist Emma Ramm is one of Blix's few visitors, and she becomes his ally as he struggles to connect the link between past and present, between the world inside and outside the prison walls. And as he begins to piece things together, he identifies a woodland community in Norway where deeply scarred inhabitants foster deadly secrets … secrets that may be the unraveling of everyone involved.
The Blix and Ramm series is back! And if like me you've been impatiently anticipating the next instalment, you'll be excited to know that Stigma is a masterclass in Nordic noir thrillers, but I expect no less from Horst & Enger by now.
We start somewhere we never expected to find ourselves, with Blix locked up in prison and Ramm finding herself alone on the outside as they work together to cross both physical and metaphorical walls to piece together their most chilling mystery yet. I love Blix and Ramm - they are an amazing pair and I love the murky imperfection both of them display as they try to do what they think is right. They way the authors bring so much emotion and feeling into a dark, twisty thriller gives it such a unique edge.
We move between perspectives, places and time with such an easy flow that makes the story so smooth and keeps the pace moving ahead at a quick and exhilarating rate despite the fact one of our main characters can barely leave a room. Every single setting has such attention to detail that it feels suffocating and isolating as though we're locked behind closed doors too.
Another blinding example of a heart-pounding thriller with a streak of authentic heart from the fabulous duo.
