BOOK TOUR STOP x RANDOM THINGS TOURS: I Might Be in Trouble by Daniel Aleman

A few years ago, David Alvarez had it all: a six-figure book deal, a loving boyfriend, and an exciting writing career. His debut novel was a resounding success, which made the publication of his second book—a total flop—all the more devastating. Now, David is single, lonely, and desperately trying to come up with the next great idea for his third manuscript, one that will redeem him in the eyes of readers, reviewers…and maybe even his ex-boyfriend.

The issue is, good ideas are hard to come by, and the mounting pressure of a near-empty bank account isn’t helping. But when David connects with a sexy stranger on a dating app, he figures a wild night out in New York City may be just what he needs to find inspiration. Lucky for him, his date turns out to be handsome, confident, and wealthy, not to mention the perfect distraction from yet another evening staring at a blank screen.

After one of the best nights of his life, David wakes up hungover but giddy—only to find prince charming dead next to him in bed. Horrified, completely confused, and suddenly faced with the implausible-but-somehow-plausible idea that he may have actually killed his date, David calls the only person he can trust in a moment of crisis: his literary agent, Stacey.

Together, David and Stacey must untangle the events of the previous night, cover their tracks, and spin the entire misadventure into David’s career-defining novel—if only they can figure out what to do with the body first.

"Nobody talks about what it's like to get everything you ever wanted ... and then lose it. There's no rulebook for what to do when that happens. At best, people will show you pity. At worst, they'll deem you unworthy of the things you had achieved - or even blame you for losing them."

Weekend at Bernie’s meets Breakfast at Tiffanies — mix a hopeless romantic, a madcap adventure through the city, a murder mystery and a strike of inspiration - I might be in trouble is a dizzyingly fun story where the main character finds himself in a situation … well, that could only happen in a book.

Daniel was a delightful leading man — a little down on his luck, so relatable, and a fabulous narrator. He tells the story from his perspective and gets us all aboard the hot mess express to get a snapshot into the life of a young man who thought he’d finally got his life together before it crumbles apart. He carefully lets us into the delicate complexity of his family, the tensions and the heartbreaks, the loves of his past, the breakdown of his career — and then of course, the chaos during the morning after. It’s easily readable, just enough thoughts and asides to let us connect with David but never too many to stop a steady flow of the story.

With David as our slightly clumsy but charismatic lead, agent Stacey as the perfect sassy sidekick and the poor deceased Robert who would’ve been the start of a perfect romance book, we have a full on cast of characters who you can’t help but love. Despite the utterly chaotic main event, it’s a soft, gentle story, full of feeling and a strange sense of wistfulness that builds and then almost fades quietly instead of ending in drama and madness — not all readers will like it, but I loved it so much it made my heart hurt a bit.

A truly triumphant, moving, slightly mad book that just has so much heart.

REVIEW: Live, Laugh, Lesbian by Helen Scott

Genre: Non-Fiction | Memoir | LGTBQ+  Release Date: 19th October 2023 Publisher: Jessica Kingsley Part memoir, part guide, part conversation and all queer joy — Live, Laugh, Lesbian is a brilliantly warm and friendly journey into the queer experience, not only from the author but from plenty of other lesbian, queer, bisexual and pansexual contributors who bring a unique viewpoint and voice and also show a beautiful diverse, intersectional scope of the queer spectrum and welcomes in queer people and allies of any kind to come feel the love. The book is very conversational, talking to the reader in a fun, friendly way — at times I rolled my eyes as the use of “famalam” but as a previous patron of Colours and Chicagos I’m not in a position to judge the Essex-isms. It’s full of anecdotes and observations that were witty and relatable as well as talking is through the more difficult side of queerness like dealing with workplace discrimination, religious trauma and coming out to family...

BOOK TOUR STOP x RANDOM THINGS TOURS: Thirty Days of Darkness by Jenny Lund Madsen

" This town has secrets that are best left alone." Author Hannah is a success, on paper at least. She's receiving critical acclaim and praise worldwide and her work is regarded as some of the best.
