Ella has grown up at The Last Page, a charming local bookstore in New York City where she now works. Her first kiss was in the women’s health section. A boyfriend dumped her in comedy. The owner is like a second father to her and has begun training her to take over the store. So when he unexpectedly dies and his estranged grandson is left everything in the will, Ella is devastated.
Henry doesn’t know the first thing about running a bookstore. With his aging mom back in Tennessee, he plans to stay in New York just long enough to ensure things are running smoothly and then head back home. What he never could have counted on was the beautiful, funny bookseller who loves The Last Page more than any place in the world—and who sees him as the villain who’s come to ruin her life.
But when it becomes evident that the store is in deep financial trouble and Henry and Ella are both at risk of losing everything, they have no choice but to put their differences aside and team up—despite the inconvenient chemistry blossoming between them.
"There was a certain magic that accompanied bookstores. They were a portal to a completely different world, where everyone cared about the same thing: books. Cocooned in the warm stacks were characters you knew as intimately as family. Worlds you felt like you were standing in the middle of."
This is a booklovers dream. A cute rivals to friends to lovers tale full of heated competition and a lot of angst, set against the backdrop of a beautiful independent bookstore.
Meet Ella, our leading lady — and someone who definitely would love this book. She encapsulates how precious stories can be to some people, which is why we completely have her back when Henry inherits the store and has no appreciation for words.
"I'm not necessarily a romantic. But saying that to any booklover would make them a little weak in the knees, too."
But both her and Henry were undeniable as narrators, the chapters splitting between them and offering plenty of romcom style laughs, heartfelt moments and a lot of fun as we root for Henry to leave, learn about the cast of team members at the store and it's rich history, then hope they can find a way to work together to make sure the last indie bookstore in town doesn't get closed down.
It’s chaotic in the way only a romcom can be — strange coincidences, drama and intense cuteness. It’s sweet, a little steamy and packed full of great book recommendations too.
"If I could choose fiction over reality? Why on Earth would I choose reality?"
